Join this Lunch & Learn to understand the background of this concept, and how Indigenous design and planning principles can be implemented in your own work.

These principles are:

Commit to Relationships and Listening
Demonstrate Culturally Relevant Design
Respect Mother Earth
Foster a Sense of Belonging and Community
Embrace a 'Seven Generations' View

These principles were developed collaboratively under the guidance of an Indigenous Advisory Committee and Subcommittee at the University of Manitoba. Their development was also supported by the University’s Indigenous Advisory Circle during the Visionary (re)Generation master planning process.

SPEAKERS

Danielle Desjarlais is the co-president of the Indigenous Design and Planning Students Association (IDPSA) at the University of Manitoba where she received her Bachelor of Environmental Design and is currently enrolled in the Masters of Architecture program.

Jordan Cantafio studies at the University of Manitoba in the Landscape Architecture Department and is the co-president of the Indigenous Design and Planning Students Association (IDPSA).

MANITOBA'S BUDGET

The Manitoba Government is in the middle of its 2022 budget consultation process. This is a great chance to get sustainable building on the agenda.

In addition to multiple-choice, there are open-ended questions where you can share your insights! Below in bold are the open-ended questions with some suggestions regarding what you can consider mentioning to let the province know sustainable building should be a priority. You can also send a letter about building Healthy Green Schools!

In their budget consultations, the Manitoba Government keeps saying that they will be building 20 new schools.

But how sustainably built will these schools be?

Manitoba used to be a leader with LEED Gold certified schools. Now we build only to a LEED silver standard.

LEED CERTIFICATION PROCESS COURSE

CaGBC is running a course to educate people about the LEED v4 BD+C certification process. Participants will learn about how to register a project and submit a LEED Interpretation or Credit Interpretation Request, as well as best practices for compiling a LEED submission package. The course will then discuss how to interpret and respond to the Preliminary Review Report and Final Review Report, what the appeal process is, and finally how projects ultimately accept their certification.

You will have access for a period of three calendar months from the date the course is made available to you.

MANSEA CONFERENCE

Save the date! The Manitoba Sustainable Energy Association (ManSEA) is excited to announce its upcoming Annual Conference, which will take place April 6, 2022, in Portage La Prairie, MB. They are planning to hold this event in person but are prepared to switch to virtual should it not be safe to do so. All public health guidelines will be followed.

LOW INCOME ENERGY EFFICIENCY

Efficiency Canada has put together an open letter about Low-income energy efficiency which was co-written by a few energy and anti-poverty activists asking for funding for low-income energy efficiency programs in the 2022 federal budget.

DECONSTRUCTABILITY USING AI

You are being invited to complete an online survey for a research project being undertaken by Habeeb Balogun, a Ph.D. student at the University of Hertfordshire, UK.

The purpose of the study is to attempt to develop a useful predictive model about the deconstructability of buildings.

This questionnaire will ask you about factors that influence the deconstructability of an existing building and it will take you approximately eight minutes to complete.

CLIMATE RESILIENCE TRAINING

The Building Regional Adaptation Capacity and Expertise (BRACE) / Manitoba Climate Resilience Training (MCRT) will offer 18 FREE introductory climate change courses for all sectors throughout the winter.

These courses will give engineers, planners, geoscientists, Northern businesses, and Indigenous organizations a shared foundation of the most up-to-date climate science information. In the new year, the BRACE/MCRT infrastructure sector will offer three courses of particular interest to engineers, geoscientists, and infrastructure decision-makers.
