CANADA GREENER HOMES GRANT
|
|
The Canada Greener Homes Grant from the federal government will help homeowners make their homes more energy-efficient, create new jobs across Canada for energy advisors, grow our domestic green supply chains and fight climate change.
What’s available through the initiative?
Up to 700,000 grants of up to $5,000 to help homeowners make energy efficient retrofits to their homes, such as better insulation
EnerGuide evaluations (worth up to $600) and expert advice to homeowners so they can begin to plan their retrofits
Recruitment and training of EnerGuide energy advisors to meet the increased demand; this will create new jobs across Canada.
Requirements for the Initiative:
Homeowners must:
- complete a pre- and post-retrofit EnerGuide evaluation (residents of Quebec and Nova Scotia need to apply directly through their provincial programs to book their EnerGuide evaluation);
- complete at least one retrofit that is both eligible and recommended by their energy advisor in their report. Only homeowners who conduct at least one retrofit will be reimbursed;
- provide and keep copies of all of their documents until March 31, 2028; and
- ensure that all products must be purchased in Canada. Online purchases are only eligible if they are ordered from an online distributor located in Canada.
What is eligible for reimbursement?
Once homeowners have completed their retrofits, they can seek reimbursement for:
- Up to $5,000 total for the implementation of eligible retrofits done after December 1, 2020.
- Up to an additional $600 for the cost of their pre- and post-retrofit EnerGuide evaluations. They will not be reimbursed for the pre-retrofit evaluation unless they continue through the full Greener Homes Grant process.
Please note that EnerGuide evaluations completed prior to December 1, 2020, are not eligible for reimbursement.

Thank you to everyone who came out to the AGM last week! It was a huge success.
We had a nice meeting where we reviewed the successes of the year. Some highlights include:
- We continued to develop our advocacy committee. We have regular meetings with Winnipeg City Councillor Brian Mayes regarding the City of Winnipeg's Climate Action Plan, have published op-eds on sustainability issues in the Winnipeg Free Press, and are working with Efficiency Canada.
- Recognizing that there was a gap in available training for sustainable building practices, we convened a committee to discuss the issue with industry stakeholders. SBM committed to serving as a hub for available training in the future. We also participated in the meetings regarding the development of energy advisor training with the Manitoba Environmental Industries Association (MEIA), Prairie House Performance, Red River College and more.
- We ended the year with a small deficit, but this has since been made by with a grant form the Winnipeg Foundation in partnership with the Manitoba Eco Network and sponsorships.
|
|
Then there was some social time where people could catch up with colleagues and provide SBM with some guidance.
More opportunities for feedback to come!

It was great to see folks mingle and enjoy our AGM Bingo! The event had great energy, thank you so much to everyone who attended!

The Conscious Builder- The Design and Build Industry is Fueling a Culture of Wast (+what we can do!) with Katie Storey
35 min
Did you know that 500 million tons of construction and demolition debris is generated annually in the US? Did you know that each year 12.2 million tons of furniture and furnishings end up in landfills?
Those are big numbers! The good news is that the Good Future Design Alliance is developing a solution. Founder, Katie Storey, joins us today for an interview to give us more information. In this conversation we talk about making the shift to a career you love no matter what stage of life you are in, the amount of waste in the design and building industry, the GFDA's mission to reduce waste, and the impacts if we don't change.
